QUARTERLY LABOUR FORCE SURVEY: Quarter 1(January to March), 2014

Stats SA today released the Q1:2014 results which show a quarterly decline in employment by 122 000 due to a loss of 110 000 jobs in the informal sector. Formal sector employment was virtually unchanged at 10,8 million compared with the previous quarter, while both Private households and Agriculture shed jobs (14 000 and 5 000 respectively). New Statistics Council inaugurated

The new SA Statistics Council, which was appointed from 1 July 2013, for a term of three years, was officially inaugurated by Mr Trevor Manuel, Minister in the Presidency responsible for National Planning, at a meeting in Ekurhuleni on 7 February 2014. Victor Khanye

Victor Khanye Local Municipality is situated in Mpumalanga province, within the Nkangala District Municipality. It is located in the Western Highveld of the Nkangala District Municipality. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, in the Gauteng province, borders Victor Khanye Local Municipality to the west. It is bordered to the north by the Kungwini Local Municipality, to the south by the Govan Mbeki and Lesedi Local Municipalities

The municipality is strategically located, as it is situated between Johannesburg in Gauteng and Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. It is also located close to the economically thriving metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng namely, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane. It is 10km from the N12 Highway, which joins the N4 Maputo corridor, the main link between Gauteng , Mpumalanga and Mozambique.

The area is approximately 1 570 km² in extent. The area is mostly plain with a few rocky outcrops and meandering rivers. Settlements in the area are sparsely distributed. Urban settlements are found mostly in Eloff, Sundra, Delmas and Botleng. Rural settlements include Brakfontein, Argent, Arbor, Dryden and Waaikraal. Agricultural settlements in the form of smallholdings are also found in Eloff, Sundra (Droogefontein and Reitkol), Strydpan and Delmas (Leeupoort). Dryden is also a railway settlement with industrial development.

Emalahleni

EmalahleniLocal Municipality is situated in Mpumalanga province, and it represents one of the six local municipalities in the Nkangala District Municipality. It forms part of the western regions of the province and borders Gauteng province. The southern parts of EmalahleniLocal Municipality form part of the precinct referred to as the Energy Mecca of South Africa, due to its rich deposits of coal reserves and power stations such as Kendal, Matla, Duvha and Ga-Nala. The southward road and rail network connect the Emalahleni area to the Richards Bay and Maputo harbours, offering export opportunities for coal reserves. It comprises of eMalahleni City as the main urban centre in the municipality, with the other activity nodes/towns in the municipal area represented by Ogies, Phola, Ga-Nala, Thubelihle, Rietspruit, Van Dyksdrift andWilge.
