Kagisano Molopo

Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality (NW397), is approximately 23 827 km².The municipal name, Kagisano Molopo, emanates from two former local municipalities, namely Kagisano and Molopo, which were mergedon 18 May 2011 to form what is now known as Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality (KMLP). The local municipality is located at the north-western corner of the NorthWest province.It borders the Republic of Botswana to the north, Joe Morolong Local Municipality in the Northern Cape to the south-west,Naledi Local Municipality to the south-east, and Ratlou Local Municipality to the east. For the year 2013/14, the municipality runs at an estimated overall budget of R110 million (source: Kagisano Molopo IDP, 2012-2017). Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality is a 100% rural municipality which consists of 77 villages under the leadership of a single paramount chief. There are seven local chiefs who operate from seven areas/villages, namely Morokweng, Tlakgameng, Tseoge, Mmadinonyane, Phaposane, Mabane and Kgokgoje villages. The 77 villages are divided into 15 political wards with a total of 30 ward councillors. Kagisano Molopo is the second largest local municipality in terms of population size within Dr Ruth SegomotsiMompati District. As per Census 2011 results, the total population stood at 105 789, which constitutes 22,8% of the entire district’s population. Emthanjeni

Emthanjeni Local Municipality is a category B municipality consisting of three towns: De Aar, Britstown and Hanover. Emthanjeni, and especially De Aar, is renowned for its central location on the main railway line between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Namibia. It is situated in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality and is the seat of this district. Its location is approximately 300 km south-west of Kimberley, 440 km south-east of Upington, 300 km north-east of Beaufort-West and 300 km south-west of Bloemfontein. The land area comprises 11% of the district land area and 3% of the province. It represents approximately 23% of the district population.read more »

Sol Plaatjie

The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality is named after Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje who was a South African intellectual, journalist, linguist, politician, translator, and writer. Solomon Plaatje was born just outside Boshof, in the former Orange Free State (now Free State province, South Africa). The Sol Plaatje Local Municipality is the second largest local municipality in the district with an area covering 3 145 km² and comprising a large urban node in the form of Kimberley, as well as villages and farms. Kimberley is the administrative centre of the municipality. Sol Plaatje Local Municipality is the largest local municipality in the Frances Baard District Municipality in terms of population size.read more »

Dikgatlong

Dikgatlong Local Municipality is a Category B municipality in Frances Baard District Municipality in the Northern Cape.  It has seven wards.  The municipal areas are Barkly-West, Windsorton, Delportshoop and a portion of the former Diamantveld District Council.

The head office of the municipality is situated in the town of Barkly West that is approximately 35 km north-west of the city of Kimberley on the northern bank of the Vaal River.  Barkly West is situated on the Kimberley-Postmasburg growth corridor. The municipal area covers approximately 7 315 km² and borders with the Magareng Municipality in the north-east and Sol Plaatje in the south-east.  Agriculture and mining form the economic basis of the area.

uMlalazi

uMlalazi Local Municipality is made up of the towns of Eshowe, Mtunzini, and Gingindlovu. The villages of Amatikulu and Ntumeni, together with considerable rural hinterland, cover one of the largest geographical areas of all municipalities in South Africa, with a total area of 2 217 km2. The municipal area is dominated by tribal areas, and 14 Tribal Authorities exist within the area (uMlalazi municipality website). The area appears to have sufficient sources for the provision of water. A complicating factor is the undulating topography, which is characteristic of the entire municipal area. In some instances it is therefore difficult and expensive to provide these services. Arterial roads through the area are in good condition. In practically all instances district roads and farm roads are in poor condition and in need of upgrading.read more »
