Background

In 2008 Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) established cooperation with the national and provincial Departments of Education through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The focus of the cooperation is based on conducting training on data handling and probability for mathematics teachers. The facilitators of the maths4stats programme, interact with provincial mathematics subject specialists to schedule teacher training sessions. The availability of teachers for training depends on provincial education department’s activities, teachers’ willingness and availability of venues.

Teacher training varies from one province to the other. In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), under the leadership of Prof Delia North initiated the Lecture Series, to provide training for teachers in conjunction with provincial Stats SA and KZN Department of Education. The lecturers from the two UKZN campuses, viz, Howard College and Pietermaritzburg Campuses conduct teacher training, while the maths4stats coordinator coordinates the training. As a result, more teachers in KZN have been trained than any other province.

The following information provides a summary of teacher training on data handling and probability in different provinces.
