Media statement on the incorporation of lottery price changes into the CPI

On Monday, 13 September 2016, Statistics South Africa announced through a note on its website, that recent price increases in lottery tickets would be incorporated into the August Consumer price index (CPI) release, due out on 21 September.

After a hard look at several methodological considerations, I have decided to postpone the factoring of lottery tickets into the 21 September CPI publication.

I have requested the CPI team to conduct further research into the matter. I will implement these changes in accordance with the original survey schedule and include them in January 2017, which will be informed by the findings of the research.

Stats SA apologises for any inconvenience.
