South Africa Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS): Appeal for participation as Publicity Officers hits the field

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), in collaboration with the South African Medical Research Council, will be conducting a South African Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) on behalf of the National Department of Health. The survey will run from June to November 2016.

The survey aims to provide a better understanding of the health status of the population of South Africa. Key topics include child health, reproductive health, adult health and nutrition. The information collected will assist the Department of Health to plan and prioritise health programmes and service delivery. It also provides an opportunity for household members to understand their individual health status.

How the survey works:

  • Data collection starts in June and will continue until November 2016
  • 15 000 homes across the country have been selected to participate
  • A publicity officer will visit selected respondents two weeks ahead of the data collection team
  • A data collection team consisting of seven people will be working in the selected areas to conduct interviews
  • A trained nurse may conduct medical testing
  • Men, women and caregivers of children will be asked questions about their well-being.

SADHS Publicity Teams

The SADHS publicity teams fieldwork starts on 6 June and will visit selected areas and homes across the country two weeks ahead of the data collection team. The Publicity Offices will create awareness about the survey and inform households they have been selected to participate in the survey.

Stats SA appeals to all sampled households to participate in the survey.

All the information you provide is kept confidential and will not be passed onto any individual or organisation for any purpose. Every Stats SA official is sworn to uphold the confidentiality of all collected data.

The SADHS publicity officers and data collection teams can easily be identified by their official identity cards and field gear.

For more information on SADHS fieldwork, please contact the Stats SA provincial offices.
