Transport and Storage Industry (2013): Road freight leads employment creation in transport and storage industry

Income 

The total income for the transport and storage industry in 2013 was R401,9 billion. The largest contributors to the total income was ‘activities of other transport agencies’ (R132,6 billion or 33%), and by ‘freight transport by road’ (R87,9 billion or 22%).

The total income represents an increase of 10,7% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (R296,0 billion). 

Employment 

The total number of persons employed in the transport and storage industry at the end of June 2013 was 299 850. ‘Freight transport by road’ had the largest number of employees (93 279 or 31%), followed by ‘railway transport’ (55 910 or 19%) and ‘activities of other transport agencies’ (28 903 or 10.

The total number of persons employed represents a decrease of 1,0% per annum over the number of persons employed reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (308 742). 

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 27%. The industry with the highest proportion of females employed was ‘travel agencies and related activities’ (69%), whilst ‘freight transport by road’ had the highest proportion of males employed (85%).

Railway freight transport

The total income from services for railway freight in 2013 was R30,6 billion. The largest income from services by type of freight was for ‘coal’ R12,1 billion or 39,6%, ‘mineral products’ R7,1 billion or 23,2% and ‘mineral ore’ R5,3 billion or 17,2%.

The total income from services for railway freight represents an increase of 15,6% per annum over the value (R19,8 billion) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.

Road freight transport

The total income from services for road freight in 2013 was R74,7 billion. The largest income from services by type of freight was for ‘break bulk/cargo transported as a unit or packaged’ R31,7 billion or 42,4%, ‘other dry bulk/unpackaged cargo e.g. timber’ R8,8 billion or 23,2%, ‘liquids’ R5,9 billion or 7,9%, ‘containerised freight’ R5,7 billion or 7,7% and ‘dry bulk/unpackaged cargo, coal’ R5,7 billion or 7,6%.

The total income from services for road freight represents an increase of 10,8% per annum over the value (R55,0 billion) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.
