Notice on the premature release of Consumer Price Index data

17 June 2015

An unforeseen technical fault caused a breach in the embargo time of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) release of the May 2015.

Twenty-two (22) mailing list subscribers received the release earlier than the normal planned time. The scheduled time for the release of CPI data was 10H00 on Wednesday, 17 June 2015; however a technical malfunction in the email system caused a scheduled email containing the release to be sent an hour earlier.

Notwithstanding this breach the data was released at the intended time on Statistics South Africa’s (Stats SA) website.

So far, Stats SA has no reason to believe that the 22 persons who received the data, breached the embargo by circulating / publicising the data prior to the embargo being lifted.

Stats SA regrets this incident and we are currently investigating the causes to prevent such in the future.
