Non-agricultural formal employment increases in second quarter

The June 2014 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that total formal non-agricultural employment increased by 155 000 jobs in the second quarter.

The quarterly increase in employment was mainly due to increases in the community, social and personal services industry (+143 000 or +5,8%); the trade industry (+17 000 or +1,0%); the construction industry (+5 000 or +1,2%); and the finance industry (+2 000 or +0,1%). There were decreases reported by manufacturing (down by 6 000 or -0,5%); transport (down by 4 000 or -1,1%); mining (down by 1 000 or -0,2%); and electricity (down by 1 000 or -1,6%).

Employment increased by 229 000 jobs (+2,7%) year-on-year between June 2013 and June 2014. Community services reported the largest increase (+220 000 or +9,2%); followed by trade (+26 000 or +1,5%); and finance (+15 000 or +0,8%). These increases were offset by employment decreases in mining, manufacturing and transport.

Gross earnings paid to employees increased by R3,9 billion (+1,0%) from R404 billion in March 2014 to R408 billion in June 2014. The increase was mainly due to increases in the community services and transport industries.

Year-on-year, gross earnings increased by R24 billion.
