Electricity sales continue to be the major source of income for municipalities

Municipal total income for the quarter ending June 2014 amounted to R68,4 billion; the main source of income was from sales of electricity, contributing 29,5% (R20,2 billion). This was one of the findings from the latest Quarterly Financial Statistics of Municipalities (QFSM) report, released on the 29th September. Other contributors to municipal income were grants and subsidies (R14,9 billion or 21,8%); property rates (R11,4 billion or 16,7%); other income (R10,5 billion or 15,4%); sales of water (R6,7 billion or 9,8%); sewerage and sanitation (R2,7 billion or 4,0%); and refuse removal (R1,9 billion or 2,8%).
