South Africa hosts the 4th ISIbalo Young African Statisticians Conference (IYASC)

Statistics South Africa will be hosting the 4th ISIbalo Young African Statisticians Conference from 31 July – 02 August 2014 in Gauteng. This biennial conference brings together young statisticians from all over Africa to present papers and be part of a statistical discourse.

The 4th IYASC is themed Young African Statisticians Staking Their Claim in Unleashing the Power of Statistics in Exposing and Disposing of Inequality Post-2015.”  The theme takes its shape from the suggestion to focus on the lessons, challenges and history of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) era as well as Post 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) agenda.

When South Africa hosted the 57th session of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) in 2009, there was minimal participation from statisticians in Africa. The IYASC was first hosted in South Africa in 2008, to prepare Young African Statisticians (YAS) to participate in international statistical conferences and to have their research work published in international reputable statistical journals.

The programme targets young professionals and graduates below the age of 35 who use statistics to define socio-economic phenomena in the continent. An invitation was sent to all young statisticians in Africa to submit abstracts and papers on topics pertinent to the development agenda of the continent. These went through technical evaluation by a team of subject matter specialists and those YAS whose papers were deemed of an acceptable quality were invited to attend the conference.

More than 120 papers from Young African Statisticians will be presented at the 3-day session.
