MINISTER AND DEPUTY MINISTER IN THE PRESIDENCY TO JOIN STATS SA IN COUNTING THE TRANSIENT, THE HOMELESS POPULATION AND NEWBORNS ON CENSUS NIGHT

Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, will join the Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) team in Cape Town on Census Night to enumerate the transient population as Census 2022 kicks off.  Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Thembi Siweya, will do the same in Johannesburg.

Stats SA will be counting the transient population at various sites across the country on Tuesday, 02 February 2022 as part of the nationwide Census Night activities marking the beginning of the Census 2022 count.

Census Night is the reference night for a population count. Everyone who is within the borders of the country on that night is included in the count. Populations in institutions, the homeless, hotels, lodges, the transients, hospitals and other communal living quarters are counted on Census Night.

Cape Town activities

Minister Gungubele will engage and enumerate people who are still in the borders of the country at the Cape Town International Airport and who would soon thereafter depart on international flights.

Johannesburg activities

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Thembi Siweya, together with the Statistician –General, Risenga Maluleke, will lead fieldworkers to count the transient, the homeless and newborns.
