Learners in Khayelitsha to benefit as international population scientists visit their school

The new Statistician-General of South Africa and head of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), Mr Risenga Maluleke will tomorrow visit Chris Hani High School in Khayelitsha and highlight careers in population studies as well as engage educators and learners to broaden the scope of these studies. The visit will also expose them to presentations that will enhance their understanding and interest in population studies. Books with content on Mathematics, Geography and HIV will be donated.

As part of the 28th Session of the International Population Conference (IPC) currently underway in Cape Town, the visit will lay the foundation for good relations between Stats SA and the Geography Community of Chris Hani High School. The school offers geography and population studies on their curriculum and has consistently achieved good results. Demography and related competencies are scarce skills in the country and there is lack of professionals in the field to undertake study design, analysis and interpretation of demographic data.
