According to the 2011 census, Tokologo Local Municipality has a total population of 28 986, of which 84,5% is African Black, 9,9% is white, with the other population groups making up the remaining 5,6%.

Tokologo is located within Lejweleputswa District Municipality. The area covers 9 326 square kilometres and consists of three former Transitional Local Councils namely Boshof, Dealesville and Hertzogville, as well as a portion of a former Transitional Rural Council (Moddervaal), which consists of approximately 1 480 farms. Tokologo Local Municipality is in the western Free State. Tokologo is a Setswana word meaning “freedom”.
