Located in the north-west corner of province, the municipality shares its northern border with the province of Mpumalanga and its western border with the province of Free State. The municipality consists of 31 electoral wards, and covers an area of 1 855 km2 (Wikipedia)

The municipality is predominantly urban (70,8%), with a large majority of the urban population living in the towns of Newcastle, Madadeni and Osizweni.

The discovery of coal at the turn of the last century sparked the development of the area’s economy. In 1969, ISCOR decided to build its third steel works in Newcastle, becoming an important source of employment for the local population. According to Census 2011, 37,4% of the 100 654 economically active individuals (i.e. those who are employed or unemployed but looking for work) are unemployed. Of the 53 886 economically active youth (15–34 years) in the municipality, 49,0% are unemployed.
