Jabavu was named after a suburb which is located in the township of Soweto, Gauteng. That suburb in turn was named after John Tengo Jabavu (1859-1921) who was a professor at Fort Hare and the editor of South Africa's first Xhosa newspaper. (GPS coordinates: 28.2758 S, 30.5289 E).
