Imbali is a name of Zulu origin, said to mean 'the flower'. The township was named in 1964 after it was designated as a residential area for black families. The area was previously occupied by an Indian community, who were subsequently evicted. (GPS coordinates: 29.6557 S, 30.3495 E).
