Newcastle was named after the British Duke of Newcastle Upon Tyne on the North East of England, Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1852 and 1859. Originally known as Waterfall River Township (due to its proximity to the Ncandu River), the town itself was established in 1864. The town services coal mines in the area, and both the Arcelor Mittal steelworks and the Karbochem synthetic rubber plant dominate the area's economy. (GPS coordinates: 27.7538 S, 29.9562 E).
