Marquard town was established in 1905 and named after an influential Dutch Reform minister, JJT Marquard, with the help of Christoffel Cornelis Froneman, the commandant of the former Orange Free State. It was established on the farm Varschfontein and attained municipal status in the same year. (GPS coordinates: 28.6758 S, 27.4244 E).
