Welkom is Afrikaans for 'welcome', and was established in 1948 on a farm of the same name. The city is known for the design of its road layout, which is based extensively on the use of traffic circles. Welkom is also the location of one of South Africa's most well known natural disasters: on the 20 March 1990, parts of Welkom were laid waste by a tornado that ripped through the town, destroying thousands of homes. (GPS coordinates: 27.9917 S, 26.7408 E).
