Kanoneiland is an island, 14km long and 3km wide, that is located in the Orange River, on a site of an intensive irrigation scheme that was developed in 1940. The name is Afrikaans for 'cannon island', having originated in 1878. During the second northern frontier war the Korannas were driven to the island by the Cape Artillery Corps, who bombarded them with cannon fire. It is said that Klaas Pofadder, the leader of the Korannas, built his own homemade cannon in retaliation, fashioned out of a large tree trunk. However, the cannon exploded, killing six of his own men. (GPS coordinates: 28.6541 S, 21.0852 E).
