Richmond was founded in 1844 and was named after the Earl of Richmond, a relative of Sir Peregrine Maitland, who was at one time Governor of the Cape. The town was also the birthplace of Dr Emil Albert Hoffa (1859-1907), a pioneer of modern orthopaedics. (GPS coordinates: 31.3812 S, 23.9332 E).
