Pofadder is Afrikaans for 'puff adder' and was named after Klaas Pofadder, a Khoikhoi Chief. The town was established in 1875. Among South Africans, the name Pofadder is often used in everyday conversation to describe a place that is very remote and isolated, (ie, a place that is located 'in the middle of nowhere').
