Port Elizabeth originally began as a military station, known as Fort Frederick, which was established in 1799. After the arrival of the 1820 Settlers the settlement attained municipal status in 1868 and in 1913 it was proclaimed a city. Port Elizabeth was named in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin (1773-1841), Acting Governor of the Cape, in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth Frances, who had died of fever two years previously.
