Cookhouse is situated on the banks of the Great Fish River, which originally formed the eastern boundary of the Cape Colony until 1819. It is said that the town got its name from a small stone house that was used for shelter and cooking by troops camping on the banks of the river. Another explanation for the name is that it refers to the hot climate of the area that was experienced by the troops stationed there. (GPS coordinates: 32.7436 S, 25.7961 E).
