East London named after a town in England was developed as a landing place for troops in 1845. The town was first known as Port Rex, probably after John Rex, who took surveys of surrounding areas. In 1848 the town was annexed by the Cape and renamed East London. City status was attained in 1914. The town is also known as eMonti in Xhosa. (GPS coordinates: 33.0103 S, 27.8576 E).
