Burgersdorp was named either (a) in honour of burger commandos during the Seventh Frontier War (1846-47) or (b) because the citizens themselves had taken the initiative in its establishment. Burger is the Dutch word for 'citizen'. (GPS coordinates: 30.9802 S, 26.3267 E).
