Oviston is a name that is derived from the Afrikaans Oranje-Vis-tonnel ('Orange-Fish Tunnel'). The town was established in 1964-5 as accommodation for those working on the construction of the tunnel. (GPS coordinates: 30.6508 S, 25.7877 E).
