Simon's Town was named after Simon Ven Der Stel, Commander of the Cape from 1679 to 1691. It developed from being the official anchorage of the Dutch East Indian Company (from 1743) and is now home to a naval base. (GPS coordinates: 34.1782 S, 18.4202 E).
