Athlone was named after the Governor-General of the Union from 1924 -1930, the Earl of Athlone. Previously known as West London, Athlone is also the site for the now decommissioned Athlone Power Station. The station's two cooling towers were a prominent landmark in Athlone until they were demolished in 2010. (GPS coordinates: 33.9709 S, 18.5339 E).
