Kuils River means 'river of pools', it was a post of the Dutch East India Company and was originally named De Cuylen. The present Afrikaan name is taken from the river, and refers to the deep and unpredictable pools encountered when fording the river. In dry seasons the river stooped running, but the pools remained.
