Durbanville was originally called Pampoenkraal. It was renamed D'Urban in 1836, after Sir Benjamin D'urban, Governor of the Cape from 1834 to 1838. In 1886 it was renamed again, this time to Durbanville, to avoid confusion with Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. (GPS coordinates: 33.8324 S, 18.6554 E).
