Robben Island is a Dutch name which means 'seal island'. Located 6,9km off the South African coast, this island was used for centuries to incarcerate prisoners. In the 17th century, the Dutch housed political prisoners from various colonies there, including the leader responsible for the mutiny on the Meermin, a slave ship. Later, the British government sentenced the leader Makanda Nxele to Robben Island for life in his involvement in an uprising in 1819. He later drowned in Table Bay in an attempt to escape. The island was also used for a time as a leper colony in the late 19th century, and during apartheid was used to house political prisoners. Former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there for 18 years. (GPS coordinates: 33.8055 S, 18.3691 E).
