Atlantis was developed by the apartheid government in the 1970s as an industrial area and community for the Coloured population of Cape Town. It is thought that it was named after the legendary city of Atlantis that disappeared beneath the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. (GPS coordinates: 33.5728 S, 18.4814 E).
