Bela-Bela as a name refers to the warm water that is found in hot springs that occur in the area. The name is Tswana for 'it boils of its own accord'. Other sources translate the name as 'the pot that boils'. Established on the farm Het Bad, the town started out as a resort, called Hartingsburg, in 1873. Renamed Warm Baths in 1903 by the British, it was proclaimed a town in 1920. Known as Warmbaths, the town's name was changed to Bela-Bela in 2002. (GPS coordinates: 24.8921 S, 28.2985 E).
