Bashee is named after the nearby Mbashe River. The name is Xhosa in origin, and is said to mean 'dark river', probably referring to the darkly wooded ravines through which the river flows. The river itself in fact was formally named Dark River, before its name was changed to Mbashe. The mouth of the river is the location where a ship, the Saint Benedict, was wecked in 1554. (GPS coordinates: 32.2397 S, 28.915 E).
