Johannesburg was originally established in 1886 on the farm Randjeslaagte, and city status was acquired in 1928. It was named after two individuals: Johann Rissik, principal clerk of the office of the Surveyor-General of the Transvaal Republic, and Christiaan Johannes Joubert, Chief of Mining and member of the Volksraad. Both men recommended that the original land be declared a gold field, and that Randjeslaagte or Doornfontein farms be the site for the town. (GPS coordinates: 26.2096 S, 28.0462 E).
