Nigel is a small gold mining town which was established in 1909 on the farm Varkensfontein. Its name is said to be derived from the novel The Fortunes of Nigel by Sir Walter Scott, which a prospector was reading when he discovered gold on the farm in 1866. (GPS coordinates: 26.3863 S, 28.4595 E).
