Boksburg was proclaimed on 2 March 1887 on Vogelfontein after gold was discovered there. It was is named in honour of Willem Eduard Bok (1846-1904), Transvaal State Secretary. Chris Hani (1942-1993), who was the leader of the South African Communist Party and member of the African National Congress' (ANC) armed wing, was assassinated outside his Boksburg home in April 1993. His assassination was a turning point in South Africa's road to democracy. At one point the political storm that erupted from the assassination threatened to derail South Africa's relatively peaceful transition, but instead it eventually strengthened the resolve of political leaders to negotiate a settlement, resulting in South Africa
