Mohlakeng means 'place of reeds' and is of Sotho origin. It refers to the Rietvlei stream that flows close by. The locality was known since about 1933 by the Nguni name Emhlangeni which also means 'place of reeds'. Mohlakeng is a township that was established on a part of the farm Middelvlei and was proclaimed on 30 January 1953. (GPS coordinates: 26.2305 S, 27.6969 E).
