Taung means 'place of the lion' in Tswana. The Batlhaping tribe encountered many lions in this area. Another explanation for the name is that it was possibly taken from a Barolong chief named Tau. The area is also famous for the discovery of the hominid fossil skull, named the Taung Child, in 1924. The skull was subsequently described by Professor Raymond Dart. (GPS coordinates: 27.5508 S, 24.7324 E).
