Ottoshoop was named in 1895 after the landdrost of Marico, Cornelius B. Otto. It is an Afrikaans name meaning 'Otto's hope'. The town itself was established on the farm Zeekoevlei in 1875. (GPS coordinates: 25.743 S, 25.9636 E).
