Mmabatho is a Tswana name that means 'mother of the people' or 'mother of the nation'. During the years of apartheid, the town was the captial of the former bantustan, Bophuthatswana, which was set up as a homeland for the Tswana-speaking people in 1961. In early 1994 an uprising in Mmabatho, against the bantustan government headed by Lucas Mangope, resulted in the deployment of South African troops and violent intervention by right-wing Afrikaaner group, the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB). The homeland was later dissolved and incorporated into the North West province of South Africa. (GPS coordinates: 25.8415 S, 25.6172 E).
