Rustenburg is a name that is Dutch for 'town of rest' or 'castle of rest'. Situated on the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range, Rustenburg was originally established in 1851 as an administrative centre for the production of agricultural goods from surrounding farms. Now it is a growing urban centre that services surrounding platinum mines. Rustenburg was the home of Paul Kruger (1825-1904), State President of the former South African Republic (Transvaal). The town is also the birthplace of Roelof Frederik 'Pik' Botha (born 1932), a politician and former minister of foreign affairs. (GPS coordinates: 25.704 S, 27.3387 E).
