KwaMashu is a Zulu name that is adapted from the English word marshall and means 'place of the Marshall'. It refers to a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Natal, Sir Marshall Campbell (1848-1917). Jeff Radebe, politician and African National Congress (ANC) member, lived in KwaMashu after his family was forcibly removed from nearby Cato Manor in 1958. The township is also the birth place of Henry 'Black Cat' Cele (1949-2007), a famous soccer player who went on to become an actor. He is well known for his role as Shaka Zulu in SABC's 1986 Shaka Zulu mini series. (GPS coordinates: 29.7416 S, 30.9902 E).
