Following the Presidents State of the Nation address at the opening of parliament in 2001, Government identified 13 specific areas for accelerated rural development. These are rural areas in South Africa of extreme poverty,with a serious lack of facilities and services. Statistics South Africa was asked to provide baseline information on these nodes, against which to measure future progress.
