Income

The total income for the personal services industry in 2018 was R380,7 billion. The total income represents an increase of 8,7% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2008 R167,6 billion. The largest contributor to increase was ‘health and social work’ (+R164,7 billion), followed by ‘educational services’ (+R97,5 billion) and ‘recreational, cultural and sporting activities’ (+R75,9 billion).

Employment

The number of persons employed in the Personal services industry in 2018 was 497 238. This represents an increase of 12 098 persons employed (+0,2%) compared with 485 140 persons employed in 2017. Health and social work ‘employed the largest number of persons (235 147 or 47,3%) followed by education services’ (126 484 or 25,4%) and ‘recreational, cultural and sporting activities’ (77 204 or 15,5%).

Average salaries and wages

The average salaries and wages in the personal services industry in 2018 was R251 218. The type of personal services with the highest average salaries and wages in 2018 was ‘education services (R349 704) followed by ‘activities of membership organisations’ (R280 140) and ‘health and social work’ (R235 312). The type of service with the lowest average salaries and wages in 2018 was ‘other services activities (R90 761).
