Income

The total income for the transport and storage industry in 2016 was R504 668 million. The largest contributor to the total income was 'activities of other transport agencies' (R156 631 million or 34%), followed by 'freight transport by road' (R120 597 million or 21%).

The total income represents an increase of 9,8% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2013 (R381 239 million).

Expenditure

Expenditure in the transport and storage industry in 2016 amounted to R483 970 million. The expenditure consisted primarily of 'purchases' (R129 394 million or 27%), followed by 'custom and excise duty paid' (R82 670 million or 17%), 'salaries and wages' (R81 182 million or 17%) and 'subcontractors paid' (R55 845 million or 12%).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the transport and storage industry at the end of June 2016 was 332 000. 'Freight transport' had the largest number of employees (126 248), followed by 'railway transport' (54 748) and 'activities of other transport agencies' (34 832).

The total number of persons employed represents an increase of 4% per annum over the number of persons employed reported in the corresponding survey of 2013 (298 629).

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 28%. The industry with the highest proportion of females employed was 'travel agencies and related activities' (66%), whilst 'freight transport by road' had the highest proportion of males employed (84%)
