Income

The total income for the food and beverages industry in 2015 was R54 533 million. The largest contributor to the total income was 'restaurants and coffee shops' (R30 027 million or 55,1%), followed by 'takeaway and fast-food outlets' (R17 396 million or 31,9%) and 'caterers and other catering services' (R7 110 million or 13,0%). The total income represents an increase of 7,4% per annum compared with the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2012 (R44 025 million).

Expenditure

Expenditure in the food and beverages industry in 2015 amounted to R53 703 million. The largest contributor to total expenditure was 'purchases' (R27 070 million or 50,4%), followed by 'employment costs' (R10 609 million or 19,8%) and 'rental of land, buildings and other structures' (R2 988 million or 5,6%).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the food and beverages industry as at the end of June 2015 was 174 601. 'Restaurants and coffee shops' employed the largest number of persons (104 352 or 59,8%), followed by 'takeaway and fast-food outlets' (49 749 or 28,5%) and 'caterers and other catering services' (20 500 or 11,7%).

Employment in the food and beverages industry decreased by 1,9% per annum compared with the number of employees reported in the corresponding survey of 2012 (184 663).

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 58,8% and that of males was 41,2%. The industry with the highest proportion of females employed was 'takeaway and fast-food outlets' (61,7%), followed by 'caterers and other catering services' (58,4%) then 'Restaurants and coffee shops '(57,5%).

The proportion of males employed in the food and beverages industry improved from 39,2% in 2012 to 41,2% in 2015. The highest proportion of males was employed by 'restaurants and coffee shops in 2015 at 42,5%.

Employment by enterprise size indicates that small and micro enterprises had the highest number of employees (89 021 or 51%), followed by large enterprises (68 645 or 39,3%) and medium enterprises (16 935 or 9,7%).
