Income

 

The total income for the accommodation industry in 2018 was R52 631 million. The largest contributor to the total income was ‘hotels, motels and inns’ (R40 806 million or 77,6%), followed by ‘other accommodation’ (R9 703 million or 18,4%)  and ‘guest-houses and guest-farms’ (R2 122 million or 4,0%) (Table A on page 3 and Figure 1 on page 7 of statistical report 64-11-01).

The total income represents an increase of 4,9% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2015 (R45 601 million).

 

Expenditure

 

Expenditure in the accommodation industry in 2018 amounted to R45 192 million. The largest expenditure was on ‘other expenditure’ (R15 698 million or 34,7%), followed by ‘salaries and wages’ (R12 136 million or 26,9%) and ‘purchases’ (R7 494 million or 18,4%) (Table 8, pages 18 Statistical report 64-11-01).

The total expenditure represents an increase of 4,3% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2015 (R39 863 million).

 

Employment

 

The total number of persons employed in the accommodation industry at the end of June 2018 was 104 714. ‘hotels, motels and inns’ employed the largest number of persons (75 463 or 72,0%), followed by ‘other accommodation’ (22 386 or 21,4%) and ‘guest-houses and guest-farms’ (6 865 or 6,6%) (Figure 1 on page 7 and Table D on page 6 of statistical report 64-11-01).

Employment in the accommodation industry increased by 2,1% per annum compared with the number of employees reported in the corresponding survey of 2015 (98 346).

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed in the accommodation industry at the end of June 2018 was 56,3% and that of males was 43,7%. The sector with the highest proportion of females employed was ‘guest-houses and guest-farms’(61,1%) (Figure 3 page 9 of statistical report 64-11-01).

The proportion of males employed in the accommodation industry increased from 41,9% in 2015 to 43,7% in 2018.

Employment by enterprise size indicates that large enterprises had the highest number of employees (45 884 or 43,8%), followed by micro enterprises (38 126 or 36,4%) and medium enterprises (17 106 or 16,3%).
