Income

The total income for the accommodation industry in 2015 was R47 219 million. The largest contributor to the total income was 'hotels, motels and inns' (R37 969 million or 80,4%), followed by 'other accommodation' (R7 023 million or 14,9%) and 'guest-houses and guest-farms' (R2 227 million or 4,7%).

The total income represents an increase of 6,7% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2012 (R38 907 million).

Expenditure

Expenditure in the accommodation industry in 2015 amounted to R41 228 million. The largest expenditure was on 'salaries and wages' (R10 015 million or 24,3%), followed by 'purchases' (R7 142 million or 17,3%), 'interest paid' (R3 093 million or 9,1%) and 'water and electricity' (R1 784 million or 3,6%).

Employment

The total number of persons employed in the accommodation industry for the last pay period ended on or before 30 June 2015 was 109 196. 'Hotels, motels and inns' employed the largest number of persons (76 650 or 70,2%), followed by 'other accommodation' (24 090 or 22,1%) and 'guest-houses and guest-farms' (8 456 or 7,7%).

Employment in the accommodation industry increased by 1,8% per annum compared with the number of employees reported in the corresponding survey of 2012 (103 492).

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 56,5% and that of males was 43,5%. The industry with the highest proportion of females and males employed was 'hotels, motels and inns' with 67,1% and 74,2% respectively.

The proportion of females employed in the accommodation industry increased from 56,0% in 2012 to 56,5% in 2015.

Employment by enterprise size indicates that large enterprises had the highest number of employees (55 284 or 50,6%), followed by micro enterprises (39 133 or 35,8%) and medium enterprises (12 340 or 11,3%).
